Throughout the year, we partner with all kinds of wonderful Northwest orgs to make our FUNdraising races special, and to give our runners and ET supporters fantastic, locally-sourced prizes at all of our events. We love getting to work with locally-owned small businesses who share our love for trails and outdoor adventures of all kinds, which was why we jumped at the chance to join forces with Boldly Went for our 11th annual Carkeek festivities this year. They supplied four rad trucker hats as raffle prizes, and as Boldly Went is all about collecting and sharing adventure stories big and small (you can find their inspiring podcast via their social pages!), we asked the winners of those hats to tell us about a run where they felt the strongest / bravest / most capable. The super buff and exceptionally kind Veronica Lim Hughes—longtime ET supporter and runner-of-tough-trail-races—was the first to respond, and you can read her inspiring story about leveling up in Squamish below:
"I've been running for about 4 years come this April 2018. Soon after beginning running, my first race was the Squamish 23k in August 2015. To say the least, I was terrified. I had never run a race and surprised myself by finishing and doing so while still feeling good. Afterwards, my next goal was the Squamish 50k and again, I was totally terrified. This was the first time I had run anything longer than 25 miles. Luckily I made it through (with the help of Alex by my side) and after that, my next goal was the Squamish 50-Miler. Leading up to the 50-Miler, I was uncertain if I’d finish. Even the night before the race, I was already telling myself it’d be okay to DNF a race as long as I tried my hardest. Despite this pragmatic and near negative self-talk, I finished 13 minutes shy of cut-off!Now looking ahead, my goal is to go for the Squamish 50/50 this coming summer. It has been during these races, especially the 50-Miler, where I’ve felt the strongest, bravest, and most capable that I’ve ever felt in my life. I really dig the Boldly Went hat because it’s been in running that I’ve felt I’ve most Boldly Went."
What about you? Have a story about a run and/or race that left you feeling on top of the world? We & Boldly Went would love to hear it!
